Soumitra Mondal's collection for Autumn/Winter 2008 at Lakme Fashion Week was a kaleidoscopic offering of garments inspired by the modern architectural objects in urban India.
The colours matched the theme with blue, pink, yellow or green at times in matt and shine to depict the lights of the city and gave the right impression of the inspiration.
Known for his interesting experiments in the past, Soumitra combined the styles of the past with the present but kept the silhouettes simple, for the specially woven silks which gave the impression of opart sky scrapers of a city.
The silhouettes were both western and Indian as Soumitra brought in dresses, skirts, kurtas, tunics, saris and blouses.
The grey black checked striped opening grey sheaths were the perfect example of the theme.
The beige sequined skirts and pleated purple blouse look was also interpreted once again in the shift dress and the tiny knife pleated dress style was also turned into a shaded maroon, grey and brown creation.
Smudgy high shine fabrics in brown, black and blue were turned into blousons, jacket, and dresses.
The two saris – one in printed blue with gold embroidery with a rose border and the other with a black beauty with sequins were great formal wear.
Here was elegant evening wear with a very strong theme which Soumitra Mondal had interpreted in creations that will appeal to a wide spectrum of buyers both in India and abroad.
