Hot trends popping up at Fashion Week

Several of fashion's big guns have yet to show their Fall 2010 collections, but a few trends have already emerged at New York Fashion Week.

THE ARTFUL COLLAGE: Several designers have beautifully combined diverse — and often surprising — fabrics (chiffon and leather) in their garments.

COMING MUST-HAVES: Christian Siriano's next Payless shoe collection, inspired by French antique furniture such as Louis XVI chairs, with filigree detailing or lion's-paw feet worked into high heels; Rebecca Taylor's sparkling hosiery in olive and navy; Donna Karan's DKNY color-patched and tied-every-which-way little dresses; white or black slash boots from Hervé Leger by Max Azria.

LADY BOUNTIFUL BUZZ: Naomi Campbell's good deed for Haiti is the talk under the tents. The supermodel formerly known for throwing telephones speed-dialed her designer and model friends — and a former British royal, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York — to help organize a star-studded fundraiser to aid mothers and children in the earthquake-ravaged country. The capacity audience (975 sitting, another 200 standing) paid up to $150 to see a slim-lined Kelly Osbourne, Chris Brown, Helena Christensen and designers Diane von Furstenberg and Donna Karan model clothes to be sold on the net-a-porter Web site. Campbell is a global ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance, a coalition that helps women and children in Third World countries. She appeared three times on the runway, greeted each time with a standing ovation.

BLACK OUT: While many designers are still pushing a dark palette for fall, a few are headed toward the rainbow. At Peter Som, purple reigned with a wine chenille skirt and a plum cotton-velvet tiered dress, a charmeuse dress and a stunning cotton-candy Mongolian lamb coat. Karan's DKNY line was rich with browns, color grids, sapphire and deco florals. Taylor incorporated teal, slate blue and purple. Lela Rose worked with flaming orange, pink and cobalt. Siriano's show-stopping shade was hot pink on an organza draped bodice and scalloped tulle gown.

TWO FOR TWO: Max Azria is the busiest designer here, with three collections on the schedule. And surprise, surprise, the first two — his youthful BCBG and the bandage-tight Hervé Leger lines — were his best ever. Azria, who caters to the young Hollywood jet set, presented a minimalist collection of color blocking worked into long black T-shirts that served as the foundation for many his asymmetrical dresses, sometimes worn with skinny trousers or leggings. Backstage at the Leger show, he said his dresses are “a second-skin armor for today's tough modern woman.” The skin-tight shells were made of neoprene, metallic knits, velvet prints and more, some enamel-beaded in hot pink and green. Azria's third show is today.

European & American fashion trends inspire Dominican designer

Award-winning designer Hernan Lander unveiled his collection for Fall/Winter 2010 in an exclusive presentation during NY Fashion Week. The much-anticipated event was held at the famed OPENHOUSE Gallery in Soho on Friday, February 12th, 2010. The crowd started gathering outside the venue way before the presentation was scheduled to begin. Select Magazine Editors and Buyers, Celebrity stylists, Designers, Photographers, TV producers, Bloggers, Media, Socials and other New York City notables came to celebrate Hernan's presentation.

For this season Hernan Lander proposed a captivating union of polished and rustic essentials. Material elements and semi-precious stones revealed their authority on the beadings, the prints and the detailing of the clothing. Modern day architectural marvels imposed their structure on the precise cuts of the jackets and the asymmetric bands. Wool, cashmere, matt jerseys, leather and snake skin created a soft and hard juxtaposition of textures while femininely curved shoulders and flexible zipper structures emphasized Hernan’s love for the female body. The palette was monochromatic with dominant purple accents. The unmistakably sumptuous couture creations created a feminine essence that was sophisticated and sensual, complex and aware. The collection highlighted pieces like silk tops, structured jackets, ruched fitted skirts, ultra feminine dresses and red-carpet-worthy evening gowns.

Hernan Lander draws upon his experience observing fashion trends in both Europe and the United States, giving him a well-rounded perspective and allowing him to expand his own design horizons. His exquisitely crafted designs have garnered public attention and attracted a discerning and growing clientele. He has found New York City to be an inspiration - not only because of its cultural and lifestyle diversity and cosmopolitan views - but also because of the willingness of its people to break with the norms and take fashion risks.

This year’s collection was inspired by the architectural marvels and the beauty of different regions and cities of the world and is a tribute to the inner and outer beauty of women around the globe. The theme was the continuing journey in the endless pursuit of beauty. Hernan used luxurious materials that fall beautifully on the female body incorporating the principles of haute couture.

Guy Harvey jewelry is gaining popularity

Guy Harvey’s famous marine wildlife artwork is now seen being worn not only by fishermen, but by men and women, college students, teens and even young kids. And most recently Guy Harvey’s artwork is showing up as fine jewelry on beautiful swimsuit models like Brooklyn Decker and Anne V in the recently released 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

“It was like walking up to the plate in the world series and hitting the ball out of the park at first bat,” said Jim Fortescue, owner of Nautora, the official licensee and manufacturer of Guy Harvey Jewelry. “I couldn’t possibly envision a better promotional opportunity than on the pages of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue for our nautical jewelry line.”

Just a few years ago, the primary place you might see Guy Harvey’s artwork outside of a picture frame, was on fishing t shirts worn by salt water fishermen. But that has changed as evidenced not only by the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, but by the millions of dollars in Guy Harvey clothing being sold through retailers across the U.S. and online to a wide variety of people of all ages.

“Guy Harvey clothing, jewelry, and other licensed products are really striking a chord with a broad cross section of people across the country,” said Bill Shedd, owner of AFTCO Bluewater, the licensee for Guy Harvey apparel and operator of the newly launched official online store GuyHarveySportswear.com. “We have watched long lines of people of all ages wrapping around the block, waiting for an autograph at Guy Harvey’s signing events...Moms with 10 year old sons, Dads with 17 year old daughters, and college students both male and female,” Shedd continued.

Filippa K S/S collection gives sensual yet manly look

Men's Spring Summer 2010 collection represents Filippa K AB in its casually relaxed approach to men’s dressing – to play around and to mix and match the different pieces for an individual look. There is a balance of classic tailoring and modern styling, where the garments have a softer and more drapey yet elegant cut. New basics feel more important than ever, ranging from the perfectly cut chino and the modern fit polo shirt to the sporty nylon jacket and the timeless car coat.

Florida of the 1980’s with its easy-going mood and breezy feel has been a major source of inspiration. The juxtaposition of masculinity, lightness and playfulness in colour and cut, gives a look that is sensual yet manly and relaxed with a hint of glamour. Softly tailored suits mixed with casual t-shirts and espadrille style shoes sums up the mood.

To get that crumpled laid back look, most of the fabrics are pre-washed. The casual look can be found on cotton summer suits, as well as shirts ranging from classic white styles with rolled up sleeves to brighter tropical check patterns and sand washed silk. Jersey tops are either relaxed pastel t-shirt styles with generous necklines and button fronts or more sophisticated with collars and detailing. Linen is a summer favourite, ranging from sloppy knits and jersey tops to elegant summer suits.
